Benefits Associated with a Wall Air Conditioner

ImageWhile there are some homes and apartments that use a wall air conditioner, most will have either a window unit or central air.  However, there are some residences that use this option but more commonly people see a wall air conditioner in a hotel room.  These units are commonly larger than a window unit and they also produce warm air just as they do cold air.

With a wall air conditioner, there is a panel that allows the user to choose the setting, the level of air output, and in some cases, a timer.  In the case of the hotel room, travelers can set the wall unit to a certain temperature and time setting so after being out all day in business meetings or playing at local attractions, the person would return to the room to find a nice, cool room waiting.  This way, while gone all day the unit is not running, which wastes electricity.  However, by setting the control, it kicks on at the right time and for the right temperature.

Now, as mentioned, there are some homes and apartments that feature a wall air conditioner, often in older homes where central air is not installed.  However, depending on the type of unit and the BTUs, this option can be enough to cool the entire home quite efficiently.  With summer just around the corner, having a wall air conditioner is a great way to live more comfortably.

Another benefit of choosing a wall air conditioner, as well as a portable unit or even central air has to do with allergies.  For individuals who are affected by seasonal allergies, breathing in air that is not cooled leads to misery.  However, turning the air on so outside air is not constantly being filtered indoors, itching eyes, a snuffed nose, and other allergic responses to pollens is eliminated or greatly reduced.

There is even an option for a wall air conditioner that also features a humidifier.  For people who live in regions such as Arkansas, Florida, Missouri, and other states where humidify levels are high, living without an air conditioner is horrible.  Choosing a wall air conditioner designed with a built-in dehumidifier helps by removing excess moisture from the air.  The opposite is true for regions with dry climates in that a wall unit with a humidifier adds needed moisture to the air, again making the environment more comfortable.

The key in choosing a wall air conditioner is that it should be installed by a professional.  Since a hole has to be cut in the outside wall, this is not an undertaking to be done by someone without the skills needed.  Without the right installation, damage on the inside and outside of the home could occur.  Therefore, while there is an investment in a wall air conditioner, it is usually worth it.

Today, there are also a number of types available for a wall air conditioner but the first step when buying is to determine the size of the space where the unit would be installed.  Of course, because of the BTUs, the square footage of the room should also be determined.  The hole in which the unit will go needs to be accurate.  Then, to ensure the wall air conditioner fits perfectly in the intended space, people should install a sleeve, which is designed to fit around the unit, great for keeping hot air out, cool air in, and any moisture from coming to the interior of the room or space.

Another aspect of installing a wall air conditioner has to do with electricity.  If wiring needs to be added, this should only be handled by a reputable and licensed electrician.  Finally, although there may only be one wall on which the unit would work, the goal is to choose a wall with the less amount of noise.  For instance, if installed on a busy street side, there could be excess noise.  In addition, the noise from the unit being operated at full speed could be annoying to neighbors.

It is important to always buy the right size wall air conditioner for the room and whenever possible, think about energy consumption.  Many of the units on the market today are designed with the Energy Star rating, which means not only excellent operation but also the best choice for energy consumption.  With this, the monthly bill to operate the wall air conditioner would be low.  Obviously, a unit designed for better energy efficiency does not have an impact on the effectiveness of the unit.
