What is a Ductless Air Conditioner?

ImageTypically, homes and offices use air conditioning units that use ducts.  Sharing the blower and other parts of the unit, the furnace also uses the ducts to heat a home.  However, another option is the ductless air conditioner, which works great for cooling an inside environment, specifically for an area of the home currently being used.

Most people agree that a ductless air conditioner works sufficiently, again designed for cooling a particular room or portion of a home or office.  This type of system is different from a central air conditioner in which cold air is pushed through ducts, thereby cooling an entire home or office.  However, a great way to still enjoy cool air but without the high cost, the ductless air conditioner is becoming quite popular.

The differences with a ductless air conditioner is that it takes up less space than that of a traditional unit and in fact, it is hard to see.  Instead, this type of air conditioning system uses one to three-inch holes for distributing the air.  Best of all, this type of system is easy to install and just as easy to maintain.  Then, there are various types of installation for a ductless air conditioner to include the ceiling, floor, or wall mounted.

The primary focus of a ductless air conditioner is that one room or a specific zone can be cooled, which helps to save on energy and cost.  Best of all, while some central air conditioning units or window units are quite noisy, the ductless system is perfectly quiet.  To create the quiet air distribution, there is an outdoor compressor or condenser, along with refrigeration or hidden lines.  With that, anything that does make noise is on the exterior of the home.

Because no ductwork is used, this type of cooling system gets the name, ductless air conditioner.  Another name heard is the mini-split system, which regardless, is installed on the inside.  Because it can be placed in so many areas of a home or office, there is not worry about making holes in walls or placing cumbersome units in an open window.  Regardless, the ductless air conditioner cools the space so the entire family is comfortable.

The outdoor unit with the compressor or condenser and the indoor air handling unit, which has a blower and evaporator built in, is what makes the ductless air conditioner work.  In addition, there is a conduit that has a power cable inside, the refrigerant tubing, and then a drain for any condensate.  With links going between the indoor and outdoor components, the ductless air conditioner works perfectly.

There are a number of ductless air conditioners available to help with cooling needs.  In fact, there are some that also feature a heat pump so during cold winter months, the space or zone can be heated.  To keep the look clean and neat, the unit itself is housed within a nice looking cabinet that helps with aesthetics and space.  The unit is then connected to the outdoor unit with a simple 3.5 inch opening in the wall.  In addition, there are a number of added amenities that can be used with a ductless air conditioner that includes:

Microprocessor Control

This type of controller helps to ensure that both temperature and humidity levels within the room where the air is being produces is comfortable at all times.

Wireless Remote Control

Using an infrared remote controller with easy to read LED is a great way for a person to make necessary adjustments to the temperature from the comfort of the bed or couch.

Dry Mode

Then, putting the ductless air conditioner in dry mode means that the fan and compressor are working intermittently so control is precise specific to the temperature in the room.  The result is making the dehumidification more efficient.

Air Sweep Control

With a ductless air conditioner, there are louvers, which help direct air flow in the direction needed.  With this type of control, the louvers can be moved up and down so the air flow sweeps throughout the room, covering all the different areas for better coverage.

Heating and Cooling Changeover

Once the functions and settings of the ductless air conditioner are set, the automatic changeover will ensure the right cycle is being run, which is based on the room’s temperature and even time of day.

Night Setback Mode

This amenity of a ductless air conditioner is that the system would automatically increase and then reset the temperature by two degrees after a 30-minute period and then another two degrees in the next 30 minutes.  For heating, the system would do the opposite by reducing the temperature by four degrees after 30 minutes from going to bed.  In both cases, more energy is saved but the temperature of the room is never such that the person is uncomfortable.
